Join us on December 7, 2009 from 7pm - 10pm for dinner and a talk by Neal Gorenflo about newly launched Shareable Magazine.

Neal is the co-founder of Shareable.  He'll talk about the genesis of the project, the importance of sharing, and how you can get involved.

Featured Project
Susan Mernit is the founder of Oakland Local, a news & community hub for Oakland, CA focused on environmental, food, development and social justice issues, and the recipient of a 2009 New Voices grant from J-Lab at American University. A former VP at AOL and Netscape, and a former Yahoo Senior Director, Mernit was the consulting program manager for The Knight News Challenge in 2008-09, as well as a consultant to organizations including Salon.com & TechSoup Global, where she led the re-design of their portal.  A popular trainer and speaker, Mernit works regularly with The Knight Digital Media Centerat USC's Annenberg School, and with The Maynard Institute, and is the Keynote program chair for the October 2009 Online News Association conference in San Francisco.

Oakland Local lauched on the same day as our October Soup Stone Supper so we got a first glimpse of the site.

]]><![CDATA[April 15th- This one was all about you!]]>Mon, 20 Apr 2009 11:50:10 +0700http://www.soupstone.org/1/post/2009/04/april-15ththis-one-was-all-about-you.htmlTen people showed up for our April Soup Stone Supper and shared what they were up to. 

I polled the group, and we figured a Facebook Group might be the best way to keep people in touch with each other, so it's up and ready to go.  Join up and keep the conversations cooking.

Here's what happened at April's supper:

Jen told us about an article she's writing about cobblers in the bay area- shoe mending, not pies.  She wants to hear your story about refurbising your clogs rather than just going out and buying a new pair. 

Elana told us about the many things she's been up to, including her work at the East Bay Jewish Community Teen Foundation, a youth philanthropy organization where young people pick a cause, raise money, and then make grants to organizations, all the while learning about the spiritual, social, and entrepreneurial sides of giving!  She encourages us to help these young philanthropist make an impact on the spread of water-born diseases like Malaria!

Josh share a little about his zine, The Fabulist which he's putting more energy into now that the organization he founded, Independent Arts & Media has a new ED to steer that organization to further glory.  He also told us about his project Newsdesk.org which scours foreign newspapers for stories that are overlooked by the US Media and presents them to a growing web audience.  Newsdesk was chosen as one of 8 finalists at the latest __ convention in Miami, and though Josh didn't win the grand prize, it seems like some great stuff is coming out of it, including a possible grant and maybe his first syndicated column in a local newspaper in Oklahoma!

Kim told us a little about Building Bridges Child Development Center, which is a new, exciting childcare organization started by a past Soup Stone Guest Rachel.  They're looking for donations, volunteers, board members, and some technical help.  On another note, Kim got recruited as a board member at the last Soup Stone Supper!!!  This is what we're talking about people.  Soup Stone in action!

"Spot.Us, www.spot.us, is a nonprofit project of the Center for Media Change. We are an open source project, to pioneer community funded reporting.  Through Spot.Us the public can commission journalists to do investigations on important and perhaps overlooked stories. All donations are tax deductible and if a news organization buys exclusive rights to the content, your donation will be reimbursed. Featured Project: 
For the first presentation, I'm stuck close to home and have asked Ada Pinkston to talk about a project we are both working on called Our Oakland: Eastside Stories.

Our Oakland is an integrated public art project by artist Rene Yung.  The project was commissioned by the City of Oakland's Cultural Arts and Marketing Division for a new East Oakland Community Library, currently under construction.  The Our Oakland project includes a large-scale architectural art glass installation at the new East Oakland Community Library and an online archive of digitized stories told by East Oakland residents.
